Salem Township, Champaign County, Ohio
Early settlement
The first part of Salem Township that was settled by European-Americans was the King's Creek valley. (The term "settled" is used here in the way the later 19th century inhabitants meant it.) The first settlers arrived around 1802 or 1803.
The second area of settlement in the township was the upper part of the Mad River valley in the town, beginning around 1809. However, there had already been a Native American (Shawnee) village in this area when this second wave of settlers came. The village included the home of James McPherson, who had been captured by Indians in 1789 and who was living here as a Shawnee, married to a Shawnee woman.
