Jesse Baum
From Black Hawk Slept Here
- Jesse Baum is listed in Michigan's Early Military Forces (2003) as having served as a private in Anderson's company from May 21 through June 21, 1832. The "remarks" column has these abbreviations for his entry: "VTS WNA 07/28/32-07/29/32." VTS stands for volunteered to serve. WNA may stand for "was not activated" but I'm not sure about that. I presume this entry means that in addition to his month of service in May and June, he volunteered when there was an additional militia callup in late July (which would have been just a few days before the Black Hawk war ended in the fighting at Bad Axe).
- There are two land patent records for Jesse Baum in Michigan, both in Constantine Township, St. Joseph County. One was for land entered at the Monroe land office, the other land entry was made at White Pigeon. The first is a quarter-section near the St. Joseph River, on the north side, downstream from Constantine. The other was a 40 acre parcel on the south side, just a couple of miles from Constantine.
- Baum is mentioned once in the 1877 St. Joseph County history. On page 28 it is stated that he was bailiff at the first county court held in St. Joseph County (in December 1830).
