Hiram Jacobs
From Black Hawk Slept Here
Hiram Jacobs (b. ca. 1802) was an early settler in Sturgis Township, St. Joseph County, Michigan. He came to the area in 1831 from Livingston County, New York, along with at least 12 other men and their families. He bought land at the White Pigeon land office, on either side of what is now White School Road, just south of US-12, and later in the 1830s bought additional land in Sturgis and Sherman Townships at the Bronson land office.
When he came to Michigan, he was accompanied by his wife, Phoebe, and three children. Six more children were born in Michigan.
He served in William Hunter's company in the militia for the Black Hawk war.
He was one of the founding members of the Pioneer Society of St. Joseph County, and was credited as one of the sources of information for the material about Sturgis in the 1877 History of St. Joseph County.
